In this presentation, key foundational elements of surface disinfection will be described as well as the role the Infection Prevention and Control Professional has in product selection. Also included is the impact of surface disinfection in controlling the transmission of Antibiotic Resistant Organisms in congregate living settings, specifically long-term care and retirement homes.

The presenter will review emerging fungal pathogens and discuss why we are seeing this emergence now.  He will describe evolving laboratory diagnostics and management of cases. 

Dr. Weese will provide an overview of antimicrobial use in animals and how it relates to AMR in humans.  He will refer to issues and challenges of AMU/AMR in animals, addressing some of the dogmas and oversimplification of this issue.  He will also discuss, where does the international community stand on AMR in animals.

The presenters will discuss the trends of antimicrobial usage in the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Inpatient population.  They will describe the current state of antimicrobial resistance in NL and describe the challenges in collecting AMU and AMR data. The presenter will discuss how bacteriophages can play a role in alternative ARO therapy, and potential future uses of bacteriophages in IPAC. He will also review research/clinical studies showing the progression of the utilization of bacteriophages in IPAC/ARO therapy.
