Biosketch: Dr Stephanie Smith
Dr. Smith is a professor at the University of Alberta in the division of Infectious Diseases. She is divisional director and section head of Infectious Diseases in the Edmonton Zone. She is the Director of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) for the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Heart Institute and the Medical Director of IPAC in the Edmonton Zone.
Dr. Smith is on a number of national and provincial guideline committees related to infection control practices to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistant pathogens. She is a member of the PHAC Infection Prevention and Control Expert Working Group and the Co-chair of the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program.
Dr Smith is involved in medical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and served as the program director for the infectious diseases training program at the University of Alberta Hospital for nine years.
Her research interests include the epidemiology and prevention of hospital acquired infections including those related to antimicrobial resistance. She also acts as site PI for a variety of clinical trials investigating optimal therapy for common infectious disease syndromes.
