Barbara Catt is a highly respected leader in the field of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), with a distinguished career dedicated to advancing patient safety and public health. She recently retired from the Public Health Agency of Canada, where she served as a Senior Nurse Consultant within the Stewardship Initiatives Division. Throughout her career, Barbara has contributed significantly to research and publications focused on disease transmission and the development of educational resources, including core competencies for infection prevention and control professionals. She played a pivotal role in the curriculum development and implementation of Ontario’s mandatory IPAC core competency certification, as well as advancing hand hygiene initiatives across the province. Barbara’s expertise has been sought on numerous national committees, including Clinical Advisory Committees, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and several IPAC Canada committees and interest groups, such as Standards and Guidelines, Prehospital Care, and the Education Core Committee. A dedicated leader within IPAC Canada, Barbara has served on the Board of Directors since 2014 and held several executive roles, culminating in her tenure as Past President in 2022. She continues to contribute to the global infection prevention community as the current Chair of the International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC). Barbara’s enduring commitment to excellence in infection prevention, education, and leadership has had a lasting impact on healthcare systems in Canada and internationally.
