Clare Barry is currently an educator and consultant across the health care continuum on Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) practices. Clare has served as the Director of the Infection Prevention and Control program at Sunnybrook & Women’s College Health Science Centre, a University of Toronto Teaching Hospital; She has been a Senior Infection Prevention and Control Consultant for the Strategic Planning & Implementation Branch of the Ministry of Health. More recently, during COVID she was a consultant for the Yukon Medical Officer of Health. Clare has been an active member in infection prevention and control associations for 35 years and has chaired many task forces and committees addressing infection prevention and control issues. She is a past president of IPAC Canada, past chair of IPAC Canada’s strategic planning committee and she represented IPAC Canada on the Canadian Coordinating Committee on Antibiotic Resistance (CCAR). She was a core member of the IPAC Canada’s Standards and Guidelines Committee and has chaired the IPAC Canada Reprocessing Interest Group (RIG) subcommittees on Reprocessing of Critical Foot Care Devices, co-chaired a working group that developed a “Position statement on Reprocessing of Critical and Semi Critical Devices in the Community”, co-chaired the IPAC Canada RIG working group on the “Position Statement on Reprocessing of Ultrasonic Transducer Probes” and was one of the principal authors of “Medical Gels”, and the “IPAC Program Components for Long Term Care Homes.” In addition, Clare has been a Board Member of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and a past member of the CSA Reprocessing technical committee. She has authored a number of articles, a chapter in a textbook and has been a reviewer for textbook chapters. Currently, Clare is a Professor at Centennial College, an IPAC Canada endorsed course. Clare received the Ontario Public Service Amethyst Award and ACE Award for the Just Clean Your Hands Program (JCYH) as the program collaborated globally; received global recognition and was a success demonstrating the power of an interdisciplinary team. Clare was awarded an IPAC Canada Honorary Membership for her contribution to IPAC. She has a passion for both the art and science of infection prevention and control implementation; hence she continues to enjoy learning and mentoring.
