Dr. Aldo J. Montano-Loza is a Hepatologist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He is the Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at the University of Alberta Hospital. He is also a Co-chair of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease (CASL) Education Committee, Co-Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Gastroenterology, the Co-director of the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Research (GILDR) unit, and the Program Director of Hepatology. He was the recipient of the International Travel Training Grant from the American College of Gastroenterology, the Clinical Research Award from the American College of Gastroenterology in both 2011 and 2018, the Canadian National Transplant Research Program Innovation Grant Award in 2018, and the Canadian Liver Foundation Research Grant for 2019.
He has obtained 2012 and 2019 Department of Medicine Clinical Investigation Publication Awards, the 2021 Alberta Society of Gastroenterology Distinguished Research Award, the 2023 Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Association for Study of the Liver, and the 2024 Department of Medicine Paul W. Armstrong
Excellence in Research Award. He was president of the Canadian Liver Transplant Network from 2017 to 2018. He has co-authored over 190 original publications. His interests in research are mainly in the areas of immune mediated liver diseases, liver transplantation, and body composition abnormalities in cirrhosis.
