Name
Analysing phonetics in interaction
Date & Time
Wednesday, June 24, 2026, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Description

The aim of this workshop is to equip participants with some basic terms and skills in auditory phonetics, with an emphasis on observation rather than transcription.

The workshop will cover topics in phonetics, including intonation. It will include a brief overview of the linguistic structure of intonation, and its relationship to turn construction; we’ll think about the kinds of data that make good topics for phonetic analysis; how you can practise listening; and there will be a slot for participants’ own data and phonetics-related questions.

We’ll spend time working on data together, thinking about how phonetic detail and interaction intersect with one another. There will be some short talks, group listening exercises, and discussions. Our main tools will be our ears, but we’ll also use Praat to illustrate things (however, this won’t be a Praat workshop). I will provide data mostly in English; data in other languages shared by participants would be very welcome.
