This workshop will provide participants with hands-on experience and skills integrating and evaluating AI tools in their own research projects. It introduces a range of practical applications for AI tools within conversation analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to try using automatic speech recognition for transcription and data annotation, and using large language models (LLMs) and related tools in responsible ways to support literature reviewing, managing and organizing datasets, analytic exploration, and writing. The workshop will provide a set of openly licensed naturalistic data that permit use with advanced, online LLMs, as well as strategies for using more limited ‘offline’ language models for more ethically complex and legally restrictive research data. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to compare the results of automated and manual processes and decide which is more appropriate for different projects, while experimenting with research workflows involving larger corpora. The workshop is intended to create an opportunity for critical reflection on the possibilities and limitations of using these tools in CA research.
