Description

Studying the everyday mundane interactions of infants, toddlers and young children using conversation analysis is becoming increasingly prevalent in global early childhood research. This research is wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary, including adult-child and peer-peer interactions in healthcare, education and home settings, amongst numerous other contexts. These contemporary global studies acknowledge the contribution and competencies of child participants, aligning with current philosophical constructs of children/childhood, and offering a rigorous way to demonstrate competencies through detailed transcription and analysis.

Aligning with this important positioning of infants, toddlers and young children as competent and capable members of society, this workshop will offer opportunity for practical engagement with video data analysis using conversation analysis to draw out children’s contributions in everyday interactions. The workshop will be structured to 1) discuss transcription issues related to documentation of infant, toddler, and young children’s contributions, and 2) how documenting in detail these contributions can inform analysis. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring ethically approved video recordings from their own studies that include infants, toddlers and/or young children to add to the discussion.
