Name
Multimodal transcription for CA
Date & Time
Thursday, June 25, 2026, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Description

The workshop introduces practices and advances skills in multimodal transcription as an important step within video analysis in CA. Multimodal transcripts suppose a specific CA conception of multimodality on the one hand and are indissociable from multimodal analysis on the other hand. The workshop aims at demonstrating and practicing both these conceptual dimensions and hands-on aspects of transcribing.

In order to do so, we will start with the collective single case analysis of a short piece of video data, which will enable us to discuss the relevant phenomena to be annotated in the transcription. Issues of relevance, participants’ orientation, action formation, action ascription, multimodal resources and accountability will be part of this discussion, as they inform an interactional and praxeological vision of multimodality. Moreover, the practical establishment of a transcript, the use of tools and the conversion between and representation of results obtained by mobilising different tools, practices for measuring temporal fragments, etc. will be discussed and practiced. Finally, we will synthetize and reflect upon the analytical advantages of the transcripts made in this way, as well as elaborate on issues of systematization and preparation of transcripts for the analysis of collections. The workshop thus bridges practical, analytical and conceptual issues.
