Epistemics—people’s orientations to the rights and responsibilities associated with knowledge and experience—has been shown to bear wide-ranging significance for the organization of interaction. This workshop combines short introductory lectures with hands-on data analysis exercises to explore the various roles that epistemics plays in interaction. Data in Japanese and English will be provided.
Topics will include:
i) the conversation analytic take on knowledge and experience;
ii) aspects of turn design best analyzed with reference to epistemics;
iii) the role of epistemics in turn-taking; and
iv) epistemics and social relationships across different contexts.
The workshop will also address some methodological considerations—the “do’s and don’ts”—for analyzing segments of interaction with an interest in epistemics.
