This workshop offers a practical introduction to the study of action formation, with an emphasis on hands-on analysis of conversational data. We will focus on two domains: (1) actions of requesting, and (2) practices of next-turn other-repetition. Each domain presents distinct conversation-analytic objectives, approaches, and challenges in examining how actions are formed in interaction. The workshop is organized into four blocks. We begin with an overview of action formation, its relation to ascription, and a review of key literature, spanning both classic studies and recent advances. The next two blocks are practical sessions: one devoted to requests and another to next-turn other-repetition, combining group and individual work. Across these sessions, participants will develop skills in analyzing grammatical, prosodic, and bodily features of conduct involved in action formation. The final block is a general discussion, drawing on insights from the practical sessions and concluding with reflections on challenges and best practices. Data will be provided by the facilitator. Participants should bring a personal computer and headphones or earbuds.
