Name
Repair in conversation
Date & Time
Tuesday, June 23, 2026, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Description

Repair organization – a system of practices for dealing with troubles of speaking, hearing, and understanding – is a central mechanism by which interactants maintain mutual understanding (or intersubjectivity) in conversation (Schegloff, Jefferson, & Sacks, 1977). This workshop is designed to give participants hands-on experience with investigating repair practices in relationship to other interactional orders. Following a brief tutorial on repair, participants will engage in a series of analytic exercises to further develop their understanding of the repair machinery and to come to see how research into repair practices can underpin and serve as evidence for discoveries about other interactional phenomena. The workshop is appropriate for both new CA practitioners and those looking to refresh their understanding of this interactional domain.
