Research data and international best practices and have shown that transparency and open dialogue are vital to achieving better public understanding, increased public trust, and improved animal welfare. Openness demonstrates that certified institutions appreciate and commit to the notion that animals who are used in scientific activities are ethically owed concern about their welfare, and that concern about animal welfare is central to their animal care and use program. The CCAC encourages institutions to increase their transparency as well as engage the public and other institutions regarding animal-based scientific activities. This session will therefore discuss the tools necessary to improve internal and external dialogue and community outreach.
